A brutal home-jacking goes hopelessly wrong. Dave, one of the two robbers, manages to run off, leaving his brother Kenneth behind. Four years later, Kenneth is released from prison and much has changed. Dave has his life back on track and is trying to help Kenneth however possible, but is witnessing how the highly strung Kenneth tries to win back his ex-girlfriend Sylvie.
Een heerlijke vuige, donkere Vlaamse film. Twee broers plegen een overval, eentje wordt er gepakt en verdwijnt vier jaar achter de tralies. Ondertussen krijgt de andere broer een relatie met de vriendin van de opgepakte broer. Je voelt het aankomen, dit kan natuurlijk nooit goed gaan.
Een zelfde benauwde sfeer als in Rundskop, je zit te wachten op de onontkoombare confrontatie. Een hele grauwe, grijze, beklijvende sfeer, schitterend weergegeven in deze film.

Ik ben altijd op zoek naar die pareltjes van het filmfestival, zoals Too Young to Die. Helaas kom je in die zoektocht ook wat mindere films tegen. The slow business of Going is er zo een. Onsamenhangend, onduidelijk, slow, eigenlijk een soort langzame visuele diaree.
Meisje met schommelstoel op haar rug is op zoek naar? Tja, dat is me niet duidelijk geworden. Ik was niet de enige, deze film had het hoogste aantal weglopers dit jaar.
Heb je zin om anderhalf uur van je leven te verspillen, ga dan lekker iets anders doen dan deze film kijken.
Anomalisa

A man crippled by the mundanity of his life experiences something out of the ordinary.
Welkom in de wondere wereld van de stop motion film. Micheal Stone is op zoek. Naar wat of wie weet hij niet, maar hij heeft het gevoel dat er iets niet klopt. Iedereen heeft het zelfde gezicht en de zelfde stem.
Behalve Lisa, zij is de uitzondering, een anomalie. Anomalisa dus.
100 yen love
Overview

An adaptation of a screenplay that won the Shunan Film Festival's inaugural Yusaku Matsuda Grand Prize. Director Masaharu Take powerfully depicts human frailty and a woman's attempt to salvage her dreary life. Sakura Ando gives a fully-committed performance in the lead role, with a dynamic supporting cast in her corner including co-star Hirofumi Arai. Rock band CreepHyp provides the theme song.
Ichiko is een 32 jarige loser. Als mams haar eindelijk het huis uitschopt, is ze gedwongen om voor zichzelf te gaan zorgen. Ze neemt een baantje in de 100 yen (1 dollar) shop. Gaandeweg ontpopt Ichiko zich van fatsige loser tot boksende dame.
Maar ja, gedoemde relaties, hopeloze gevallen, de subcultuur van Tokyo blijft een gevangenis.
Too young to die
Overview
High school student Daisuke has a crush on classmate Hiromi. On the way to a school trip, the bus with Daisuke has an accident. When Daisuke wakes up, he finds himself in Hell. He asks himself "Why only me? I'm too you young to die and I've never experienced a kiss." Then, Killer K appears in front of the confused Daisuke. Killer K leads the rock band Heruzu from Hell Agricultural High School. To return to the living and confess his feelings to Hiromi, Daisuke's hell rounds begin under Killer K's special training.
Af en toe kom je op het Internationaal Film Festival Rotterdam een pareltje tegen. Vorig jaar was het de japanse gangster hip hop opera Tokyo Tribe, dit jaar de demonische rock battle Too young to die.
Het verhaal is heel simpel. Scholier komt in de hel, en kan reïncarneren in een volgend leven als hij wint in een rock battle. Helaas is dat niet altijd een succes voor de scholier, zo komt hij terug op aarde als een bidsprinkhaan, een zeeleeuw, een parkiet, een hond en zelfs als een kreeft. En probeer dan maar eens de liefde van je leven terug te winnen.
Ik heb in tijden niet zo gelachen bij een film. Volkomen absurdistisch, overgoten met zwarte en demonische humor, met uiteraard een vleugje romantiek. Maar dan in de hel.
The Garbage Helicopter
Overview
Somewhere in Sweden, a gigantic dumpster breaks free from a heavy chain suspended underneath a big helicopter. The dumpster hits the ground with a formidable crash and the garbage spouts out into the surroundings. Meanwhile, an aging Roma woman wakes up in her house with an extremely strong desire to get her old wall clock back.
Het begint gelijk al goed, de koekoeksklok van Oma is stuk. Als na een jaar de vervangende onderdelen nog niet binnen bij de reparateur zijn, is Oma het zat. De klok moet terug.
Dat is het uitgangspunt van een hilarische roadmovie. Zwart/wit, Zweeds, droger dan een Ikea kast.
Gonin Saga
Overview
Seiji (Masanobu Ando) is a third generation "Gosei kai" gang member. He works to build up the group's strength. Meanwhile, a journalist (Tasuku Emoto) investigates a case that occurred 19 years ago. He meets Hayato (Masahiro Higashide), Daisuke (Kenta Kiritani) and Asami (Anna Tsuchiya).
Een schoolvoorbeeld van de klassieke neo-noir yakuza film. Er is ergens een groot onrecht gedaan, en de wraak zal zoet zijn. De bazen van de lokale gang voelen zich onaantastbaar, de benadeelden zullen ongenadig hard terugslaan.
Zo gaat het standaard maffia / yakuza script, en deze film voldoet precies aan je verwachtingen. Alle spanningen lopen op tot een zinderende finale, en zoals het script voorschrijft eindigt het in een compleet bloedbad met dood en verderf.
Geen verrassingen, maar wel een hele goeie invulling.
The Dork, the Girl and the Douchebag

A man with a wife and child attempts to run off with a hostess, but he doesn’t show up at the place they agreed to meet. The hostess continues to wait fully aware he won’t come. Then a man calls out to her…. “The Dork, The Girl, and The Douchebag,” the latest film in three years by OKUDA Yosuke who made his commercial film debut with “Tokyo Playboy Club” (11), is a powerful ensemble drama intertwining a drug dealer, a yakuza, an ex-convict youth, and others. It can be said the film inherits the setting of his previous work, but the intense realism exhibited in the raw chaos far exceeds the previous film and amply points to OKUDA’s future potential. Portraying the complex male character who only lives for violence, OKUDA’s talents as an actor should also not be overlooked.
Een smeerlap is het, de regisseur en hoofdrolspeler uit deze film. Ronselt / verdooft vrouwen in zijn bar en verkoopt ze aan de lokale yakuza bazen. Dan moet je natuurlijk niet een vrouw verdoven die al eigendom van de yakuza is. Foutje, bedankt, nou moet je betalen, en flink ook.
Een heerlijk smerig, maar matige film, met af en toe wel heel realistisch geweld.
Lowlife Love
Overview
Tetsuo (Kiyohiko Shibukawa) is a lowlife. A film director with a small indie hit many years back, yet he has never gotten any further as he refuses to go against his 'artistic integrity'.
Zoals het Goede Doel ooit al zong, “Als het gaat om geld, als het gaat om vrouwen, wie kun je dan vertrouwen?” Deze film draait om de hypocretie in de Japanse B-film scene.
De regisseurs en de producers zijn op zoek naar inspiratie (lees sex), en vinden die vooral in hele jonge actrices. Hele jonge actrices zijn op zoek naar de hoofdrol in de volgende succes film en hebben daar alles voor over (lees sex).
Er is geen geld, er is geen film, er is alleen het verlies van onschuld. Een heerlijke zwarte komedie uit Japan.
